Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on 11th August the registration of the World’s first Covid-19 Vaccine, as stated and claimed by him. The vaccine candidate is named ‘Sputnik V’ after the Soviet’s satellite name.

Although the vaccine candidate has been registered as a Vaccine, it is yet to complete Phase III clinical trials.

“As far as I know, a vaccine against a new coronavirus infection has been registered this morning, for the first time in the world,” Putin stated, as per RIA Novosti reports.

He also added that one of his daughters has received this vaccine.

“In this sense, she participated in the experiment. After the first vaccination, she had a temperature of 38, the next day 37 with a little – and that’s it,” Putin said.

He further added that it forms stable immunity and will last for 2 years.

Mikhail Murashko (Head of the Ministry of Health, Russian Federation) said that it will be produced at two sites namely the Gamalei Center and Binnofarm.

“Vaccination will be offered to doctors and teachers in the first place,” he further added.

“We expect tens of thousands of volunteers to be vaccinated within the next months,” Kirill Dmitriev, chief executive of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, as per reports of ABC News.

This vaccine candidate is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov identifier (NCT number) NCT04437875 on Clinicaltrials.gov. The study completion date has been updated to August 10th, which was previously mentioned to be 15th August 2020 (recently updated on August 12, 2020).

According to this, the actual study date was 17th June 2020 with an actual enrollment of 38 participants, which raises serious concerns about the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine.

As per data, the Vaccine has been developed in about only 2 months, meaning that there is insufficient data to prove its efficacy and safety in the long run. There are no data available regarding any side-effects associated with it.
